MarsLink Kit #3 Crater Activity Images
Original:10 February 2000
Revised: 13 February 2000
Explanation:
These 3 pictures can be used with the Planetary Society's MarsLink Kit #3
"Craters and Volcanoes" crater morphology activity. These pictures
are similar to the ones shown in the "mini-poster," Windows to the
Cratered Martian Surface: Four Examples of Impact Craters on Mars,
a MarsLink product that is ©1996 The Planetary Society.

The above picture is similar to the one that shows craters (A) and (B)
in the original MarsLink "mini-poster". Crater A would be the small
one toward the upper left, Crater B is the larger one toward the lower
right. This is not the exact picture used in the MarsLink kit, we found
no information to indicate which image was used for the kit. The crater
morphologies are very similar, however. The picture shown here
is a subframe of Viking 1 orbiter image 006A93 and is located northeast
of Ares Vallis. The picture was taken June 25, 1976, as part of the
effort to find a safe landing site for the Viking 1 lander.

The above picture is the EXACT same image used in the MarsLink Kit #2, it shows
the 18 km-diameter impact crater, Yuty, which is located north of Ares
Valles and north of the Mars Pathfinder landing site. This crater is
labeled (C) in the MarsLink "mini-poster". This is a subframe of Viking
1 orbiter image 003A07; obtained June 22, 1976, during efforts to pick
a safe place for the Viking 1 lander to visit.

The above picture shows
the crater Pickering, located in southwestern Daedalia Planum.
It is about 115 km across and has been partly breached and flooded by
lava flows. This crater is labeled (D) in the MarsLink kit #3. This
appears to be (maybe) the same picture as was used in the kit.
This is Viking 1 orbiter image 639A22. It was acquired March 18, 1978.
