ECAM Sample Video and Still Images

The sample video below was acquired using the 3-Megapixel Color CMOS Engineering Camera (ECAM) during actuator testing of the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). MSSS developed the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) instrument for this mission, comprising two high-resolution telescopes and a wide field multi-spectral camera.

LRO High-Gain Antenna Range-of-Motion Test, Inspector Satellite View

This view was achieved with a wide-angle (4.8 mm) lens at a range of ~5 meters from the spacecraft and is representative of an inspector-satellite view. The camera was commanded to take HD1080 (2048 x 1080) format images at 4 frames per second. The 4 frame per second rate is more than adequate to capture the relatively slow motion of the antenna.

LRO Solar Array Gimbal Test

This view can be achieved with a medium-angle (12 mm) lens mounted on the body of the spacecraft. The camera was commanded to take QXGA (2048 x 1536) format images at 2 frames per second. The sequence was then processed into an 8x speed video.

LRO High-Gain Antenna Range-of-Motion Test, Spacecraft Mounted Camera View

This view is achieved with a wide-angle (4.8 mm) lens mounted near the body of the spacecraft. This set of videos demonstrates the trade between frame size and frame rate and the windowing flexibility of the camera, with formats ranging from VGA (640 x 480) at 20 frames per second to QXGA (2048 x 1536) at 2.5 frames per second. The 2.5 frame per second rate of the QXGA video is more than adequate to capture the relatively slow motion of the antenna.
