Phoenix Mars Descent Imager (MARDI)

Phoenix Mars Descent Imager with microphone

The Phoenix Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) was designed to take pictures during the descent of the Phoenix lander to the martian surface in May 2008. However, owing to technical concerns on the spacecraft side of the interface, NASA decided not to operate the MARDI. Late in the Phoenix mission, an attempt was made to acquire sounds through the MARDI microphone, but no data were received and the mission ended shortly therafter.
