The ridged surface in the lower half of this image
is that of a large lava flow in Daedalia Planum, southwest of the Arsia Mons
volcano. The flow was stopped here by a buried crater rim (topographic high
in the upper half of the image). This picture was taken by the
Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera in June 1999. Illumination
is from the upper left.
Malin Space Science Systems and the California Institute of Technology
built the MOC using spare hardware from the Mars Observer mission. MSSS
operates the camera from its facilities in San Diego, CA. The Jet Propulsion
Laboratory's Mars Surveyor Operations Project operates the Mars Global Surveyor
spacecraft with its industrial partner, Lockheed Martin Astronautics, from
facilities in Pasadena, CA and Denver, CO.
