ATLO Process Continues

Stacking the Spacecraft and Weighing "Jaws"

In February, the Nadir Equipment Deck (NED) was mated to the Equipment Module, and the completed Equipment Module was then mated with the propulsion module. A set of images of this process can be found at URL http://mgs-www.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/se/atlo_pics/build/buildup.html

Reproduced here are some of the images that show the MOC handling fixture.

During February, a spacecraft mass audit was conducted in anticipation of delivery to the launch vehicle manufacturer the "present best estimate" of the launch mass. It was discovered that the mass of the MOC 2 handling fixture (affectionately called "Jaws") was not known to sufficient precision. After discussion, JPL and LMA management decided to risk the removal of the cover in order to weigh it.
